The Gold Beneath The Gorse / Yr Aur O Dan yr Eithin

The title of this body of work,is taken from the Welsh proverb 'Gold under gorse, silver under bracken, starvation under heather'. The gorse and bracken soils were valuable enough in the context of Welsh hill farming to inspire the proverb which refers to the prosperity of the uplands in the early modern period. With the same appreciation for the endowment of the land,I use slate,clay and gorse which to me are all forms of gold that embody the rich textures, histories and memories of a place.

Daw teitl y darn hwn o waith, 'Yr Aur o dan yr Eithin', o'r hen ddihareb Gymraeg 'Aur dan yr eithin, arian dan y rhedyn, newyn dan y grug'. Roedd priddoedd yr eithin a'r rhedyn yn ddigon gwerthfawr yng nghyd-destun ffermio mynydd yng Nghymru i ysbrydoli'r ddihareb sy'n cyfeirio at ffyniant yn yr ucheldiroedd yn y cyfnod modern cynnar. Gyda'r un werthfawrogiad o waddol y tir, rwy'n defnyddio llechi, clai ac eithin sydd i gyd yn fathau o aur i mi ac yn ymgorfforiad o weadau, hanesion ac atgofion cyfoethog am le.

These are all pure Welsh Slate that have been kiln fired and shaped. Each slate piece has been placed with a porcelain bowl decorated with a glaze made from the gorse flower.

Mae'r rhain i gyd yn Llechi Cymreig pur sydd wedi cael eu tanio a'u siapio mewn odyn. Mae pob darn o lechen wedi'i osod gyda bowlen borslen wedi'i haddurno â gwydredd wedi'i greu o'r blodyn eithin.
